Selecting The best Bicycle

Many people have found reason in taking up cycling. There are many that decide to ride bicycles because they are able to save a ton of money on both the price of gas and maintenance costs. Some are 'going green' and taking an active part in trying to help our environment by choosing to ride a bike over a car.

And there are some who like to cycle simply because it is fun. No matter your reason for choosing to take up cycling, you need to know some important things before you decide on your first bicycle. There is more to choosing the right cycling bicycle than the colors used to paint it! Contained hereafter are some hints and tips you can use to pick the bicycle that is perfect for you.

It goes without saying that choosing the correctly sized bike is of utmost importance. To do this, you will need to measure your inseam. Simply measure the distance from your groin to the bottom of your foot, down the inside of your leg. Ideally you should be able to place both feet on the ground while on your bike. This is for saftey reasons and will allow you to stop the bike if your brakes fail, avoiding any injury.

Always keep in mind that you want to test the bike before you buy it. Take it around the block if you can to make sure that it's worth the money and it's right for you. It's the same concept as buying a used car, there's no way you would take it without testing it.

The same rule applies to a bicycle. You really need to be sure to test it if you plan to spend a good bit on the bicycle or if you are going to be spending a lot of time riding it. You want to find a bike that fits you. Physical fit is easy to determine, but you also need to find a bike that “fits” your riding style. You wouldn't want to spend your hard earned money on something that isn't comfortable, would you?

Be certain to leave adequate room between yourself and your bikes crossbar. When you choose your bike, adjust the seat up a few inches from the crossbar and then sit on the bike. You should be able to still rest your feet flat on the floor. Each type of bike requires different clearances. A good example is a touring bike, with these bikes you will only need around 1" difference. However for a mountain bike you will need 3" between the crossbar you could try these out and yourself. You need to consider several things when choosing your bicycle for the first time. Are you going to be using your bike every day or will you only be riding every so often? What height makes you feel the most comfortable? Are you a person who would rather your feet be flat on the ground when you are sitting or would you rather have a little room between your feet and the ground? All of these factors will come into play as you make your choice.
